My tips & tricks for tracing Burda Magazine patterns

Tracing Burda Magazine patterns

This was supposed to be the perfect sewing weekend. My husband is away indulging in his time consuming and expensive hobby – karting, so I had the house to myself and absolutely no chores, plans or obligations to take me out of the house. Or rather, I had plans: to spend as much time as possible sewing! I need to make a dress for a wedding we’re going to next weekend, so I needed to get going.

It is now Saturday evening and I have not sewed a stitch. Why, you might ask? Did something come up, did you get lazy? No, actually, I have been doing sewing related things until 11 last night and from 9 AM this morning. And still haven’t cut out my dress.

And the reason is TRACING!!! I am using a Burda Style (the magazine) Special Vintage, but this goes for any Burda magazines. It’s a lovely design, but has 12 pieces and it took me hours to copy them out!! I could have finished the whole blinkin’ dress in that time!!

Best steam generator irons for sewing – Please advise

Post 78

I’ve been a really good girl and managed to make some savings in the past few months, must be all those clothes I’m not buying – oh wait, I spent that on fabric already *blushes in embarrassment*. Anyway, last month I was pressing a silk blouse and my otherwise fairly ok iron, a Tefal, spat out hot water like the devil and left a fab imprint of watermarks in the shape of iron holes. So this made me think I should maybe look for a new iron, or, even better, a steam generator iron, otherwise know as a pressure (or boiler) iron.

Tip for organising your rulers and pattern makers

How to

Today I wanted to share another little organising tip for your sewing room. Since I started sewing almost 7 years ago, I have managed to gather quite a few quilting rulers and pattern makers and when I was organising my sewing room, I had to come up with a solution to keep them tidy and accessible.

Ta-dah!

Tip for organising your sewing machine needles

Pro Tip (1)

I’m not gonna lie, I’m a bit of a compulsive organiser. I do love to have everything a nice neat box, or several, and to be able to get to what I’m looking for as easily as possible.

Last year, I reorganised my sewing room and put all my haberdashery into a divider box. However, as time went by, I realised that this is not the best solution for items that I need to use very often, especially for my sewing machine needles. It really annoyed me to dig under the table, open the box, close the box etc. So I have been looking for options for this and came across a brilliantly simple idea: PILL BOX DISPENSERS.

Let’s talk sewing gadgets

DSCF5982

Hello sewing gang, I’ve missed you! Hopefully the feeling was mutual, so here I am back in blogging business… Though I must confess, May has not started very well on the sewing front. This was the first weekend in ages when, although I was not travelling or otherwise engaged, I haven’t done any anything sewing related. And I feel very guilty. Plus I have forlorn you guys for almost 2 weeks, which is not top of my proud achievements list either. Excuses I have, loads. Mostly work, but also more exciting stuff like teaching my first class last Tuesday, and a very exciting walking tour in Brick Lane, discovering the textile past of East London. But I just can’t brag too many great completed garments. I was sewing like crazy for a guest blog post, but that’s only going to be published next week, so I can’t reveal it just yet. Otherwise, bad sewing Alex, no cookie!

Still, I need to talk to you guys, I’ve only just made sewing friends and now I’m deserting you? No, that just can’t happen. So here we are with a non-make post, but one which I still hope you will find interesting and discussion worthy. SEWING TOOLS!!
