The sign of a great holiday is how hard it is to get back to normal when you get back. And by that standard, my recent trip to California (hope you got a glimpse in my IG stories) was ah-mazing! But now it’s time to come back to the ‘real’ life, which includes the good ol’ blog as well…
I still have so many summer makes to share with you (all photographed and ready to go), and I’m already feeling the mood of the (Northern hemisphere) moving towards autumn sewing. So I will try to squeeze as many posts in before it gets too cold and you will think I’ve gone mad with my warm-weather posts.
So here goes…
You might remember from last year that I tried to start a blog series in which I styled one handmade item in 3 ways. Unfortunately, it didn’t end up being quite a series, with just one post, but I am looking to revive it today.
And what better candidate than perhaps my favourite make of the summer, Mira from Fibre Mood?
Let’s check out how I styled Mira for work, play and comfort. Of course, you can apply these ideas to any similarly shaped dress, A-line with gathered tiers, to any other dress that you have in your wardrobe (handmade or RTW).

1| STYLING Mira for work
My office is fairly casual, so I can afford to be more relaxed in my wardrobe choices. In fact, I have pretty much eliminated all pencil skirts from my closet. That’s where something that is equally fun, comfortable and polished like this brushed cotton dress can come in perfectly.
LAYERING: As much as I love my navy Mira, I have to admit that it really is a bit short. So there is no way I could wear it at work on its own. In comes my favourite trend of the summer: dresses over trousers! So I paired with a pair of light pink chinos RTW that I’ve had in my wardrobe for years.
COLOUR PALETTE: Pink and navy are, of course, one of my favourite colour combinations. I’ve added a pair of navy flats, perhaps my most worn shoes this summer other than trainers. They are super old, yet so so comfortable, and I do believe I will be wearing them till they completely fall apart.
ACCESSORIES: As to accessories, I’ve gone for coral, with a set of bead necklace and earrings, plus a beige canvas clutch, all of which have been in my wardrobe for ages. I don’t usually wear necklaces at work, as they get tangled in my pass laniard, but I think this one goes so nicely on the navy ‘canvas’ that I made an exception.
PROPORTIONS: I really like the look of the voluminous dress over skinny trousers, as well as the above the ankle length of the chinos together with the pointy flats. I am definitely a pointy flats kind of girl, even my colleagues commented that they are my signature type of shes.
2| STYLING MIRA FOR COMFORT
I have been living in trainers this summer, and although I’m not into this new athleisure trend at all, I am definitely warming up to the trainers + dress combo. With the oversized reusable tote bag, I am ready to go to the farmers market before heading off to brunch!
COMFORT: Nothing says comfort to me more than trainers, and I am ready to pair this pair I made myself with pretty much anything. They are neutral with the taupe and white combo and I think they go really well with the darker dress.
BALANCE: I like to colour coordinate my outfits as much as I can, so I added pops of white and navy through the scarf and the tote bag. The scarf is made by me with fabric from a holiday in Portugal and the tote is recycled cotton I got for free at a denim fair (but it does get loads of use).
THE DENIM FACTOR: I think denim goes with everything, and this cropped little jacket has been working hard for me this summer. I wear it with pretty much any outfit and I think it goes so well in colour and proportions with the A-line of the dress.
3| MIRA FIBRE MOOD FOR FUN
Time to go out to play! Ok, maybe not quite clubbing, but I have worn this outfit out for drinks with friends in a cute little bar by the river. The sign that I’m going out is taking out the heels! I hardly ever wear heels in everyday situations, but I will make exceptions if I’m taking a cab there and back.
ACCESSORIES: This outfit is definitely about the accessories. The heels really give it a babydoll 60s vibe, especially because of the cork platforms. I also really like how the off-white bag (from *Marks & Spencer) breaks up the dark mass of the dress. The bum bag worn over the shoulder was definitely a summer trend this year and I can see why. A belt bag is not really suitable for outfits without a more defined waistline. So it would not have worked with the empire waist. I, therefore, decided to wear it across the body at the max belt length and it hit at just the perfect point.
